A day all to myself- opening my artistic mind

Because I woke up, did yoga, read, drew, journaled, and wrote a poem, my mind and body already felt connected. By the time I walked to the studio, it felt like there was a hidden poem inside my body—just waiting to come out through movement. (Even if my legs felt like they weighed 100 pounds each.)

Starting with ballet always makes me feel like I’m home. Ballet is my ritual. It helps me organize my brain and body. It wakes up my nervous system, my muscle memory, and all the little pathways that need a spark. And honestly? It feels horribly good. That weird mix of discipline and joy I always come back to.

After about an hour and a half, I shifted into improvisation. I started with no music—just letting myself wiggle and shake out whatever emotions or body twitches needed to move through me. I’ve learned that I need to do this to clear space—to lay a foundation for the piece I’m building.

Usually, I get these really random flashes of imagery—like a split-second vision—and I build off of that. Today was one of those days. I had a flash of something strange and interesting, so I followed it. I brought it to life, just to see where it would go.

Sometimes these ideas work. Sometimes they don’t. But I try them anyway. That’s the whole point.
